A Guide to Organic Wool Pjs for Toddlers: Not Just for Winter
Sleep is one of the most essential parts of everyone’s night routine, especially for children. It’s an indispensable part of a healthy lifestyle since by getting enough sleep, children will have improved attention, behaviour, memory and learning abilities. By getting enough sleep, they can also improve their mental and physical health, otherwise, they can start having problems with high blood pressure, obesity and depression.
Establishing a consistent bedtime routine surely is one of the crucial factors for having a good night’s sleep, but aside from taking a warm bath, dimming the lights and putting them in bed at the same time, their PJs or to be more precise the PJs material plays a huge role in how comfortable your child will be while sleeping. Sometimes, restless sleep can also be the cause of sleeping in uncomfortable PJs, so opting for organic PJs for toddlers made from natural fibres will help your child stay comfortable. A good example of such material is wool.
Why Wool?
One of the most common misconceptions about wool is that it’s itchy and it could be harsh on children’s skin. However, this isn’t true at all, since wool is a natural fibre which when processed, it becomes one of the comfiest materials that can provide your child with the needed comfort. This will certainly improve your child's sleep from which he can obtain all the needed benefits. Even though cotton is considered one of the most child-friendly materials, wool is way better when it comes to body temperature control and moisture-wicking.
Benefits of Woollen Pjs
Regulates Body Temperature
You already know that body temperature can play a huge role in how comfortable your child can be while sleeping, and luckily, wool is one of the few natural fibres that can give your child this. Compared to cotton, wool is twice as effective at moisture wicking and 10 times as effective as polyester. Once on, wool fibres can draw away moisture from your child’s skin and release it slowly in the air, by making no changes in the body temperature of your child. Aside from regulating the body temperature, woollen organic PJs for toddlers can promote deeper and longer sleep which will contribute to having a cheerful and less anxious child.
Perfect for Sensitive Skin
Organic PJs made of wool are also great for children with sensitive skin because they have hypoallergenic properties. Even though at first wool may seem itchy and uncomfortable, the truth is that it’s finer than human hair and its fibres bend easily without irritating the skin. Wool also has antibacterial properties which when combined with its hypoallergenic ones, make it perfect for a baby’s skin. Aside from causing no rush, this material will keep your child’s skin free from bacteria, keeping his skin healthy and clean.
Ideal for Every Season
Another common misconception about wool in general is that it should be worn only during the cold time of the year. Thanks to one of its greatest benefits – to wick moisture and regulate body temperature, one can wear wool PJs and clothing in general throughout the year. So, during the colder time of the year, you can wear long-sleeved PJs made of wool, and for the warmer time, you can wear short-sleeved PJs. Simple as that!
There are many other benefits from investing in PJs made of organic wool and the main one is that wool is fire-resistant material thanks to the natural protein in it – keratin. Thanks to it, wool can resist heat without showing any signs of melting or splitting. Wool also has UV protection thanks to the presence of melanin which is a natural pigment that protects animals from harmful UV rays. So, aside from investing in organic PJs made of wool, you should also consider investing in woollen clothes as well.
How to Care for Woollen Pjs?
The general rule about caring for woollen apparel and PJs is to wash them as less as possible because wool on its own has antibacterial and anti-odour properties. Usually, all you’ll need to do is to brush off any food or dirt with a soft nail brush and air the PJs and garment for 2 – 3 days. This will be enough for the wool to clean and in case of stains, you can use a special wool stain remover, gently rub it into the area and leave it for 15 minutes.
For hand washing, you’ll need to fill a basin with lukewarm water, add a small amount of shampoo designed for woollen garments, submerge the PJs, squeeze them under the water and rinse them in another basin filled with clean lukewarm water. When done, remove them from the water, gently squeeze them, and put them in the washing machine on a spin of no more than 400 – 600 revs and air dry them. If washing them in the machine, it’s strongly recommended to do that on a cold wool machine cycle and a slow spin max 400.
